It will be possible for a female chicken to accept external characteristics of a male, a phenomenon described as intercourse reversal. (To date, spontaneous sex reversal from male to female has not yet been reported.) Genetically and anatomically, a chicken which includes experienced intercourse reversal continues to be a hen, nonetheless it has characteristics that are secondary to those of a male.

Typically, several observable variations in the additional sex traits of roosters and hens occur (as shown in Figure 1).
